Black Women in Higher Education: Department of African Studies

WPS 22 Cover

AUTHOR: Babajide Tella

This report offers a brief overview of the history of Howard University’s Department of African Studies and discusses some of the achievements of female students, faculty, and staff in the department. The study finds that female students have been integral to the successes recorded by the department since its establishment in 1953. A significant number of its alumnae have become university professors in the United States and across the world, and others are flourishing in other sectors of society. Based on the available evidence, the report concludes that a comprehensive history of the department cannot omit the pioneering role of female students, faculty, and staff.
