Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership Celebrates First Year of Programming and Student Graduates
On April 29th the Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership (CWGGL) convened an end-of-the-year ceremony attended by several stakeholders including Deans, members of the center’s Executive Council, Student Ambassadors, Student Volunteers and staff. The event was an opportunity to highlight the activities and programming of the center, and to celebrate graduating seniors affiliated with the Center.
In a brief presentation, the founding Director of the Center, Dr. Dawuni, informed the attendees of the appointment of Dr. Anita Plummer as Associate Director of Research and Faculty Engagement and Dr. Amy Yeboah Quarkume as Associate Director of Student and Community Engagement.
Dr. Dawuni credited her team of staff, student volunteers and key stakeholders for the Center's achievements in the first year. Some of the major achievements include the creation of the Minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, the research project on Women at Howard University, Howard University’s commitment to the HeForShe Initiative, the establishment of a series of recurring events, such as Chat and Chews, Global Leadership Dialogues, Fireside Chats, and various programs as part of the celebration of Women’s History Month.
For the upcoming academic year, Dr. Dawuni states that the Center aims to hold an annual conference on Women and Leadership, establish a certificate program on women and entrepreneurial leadership, support student learning through graduate and undergraduate fellowships, and put in place a study abroad program. Considering the heavy schedule for the next academic year, Dr. Dawuni reiterated her call for students, faculty and other supporters to get involved in the Center’s activities.
The ceremony ended with the recognition of graduating students who are affiliated with the Center as student ambassadors, interns, Center staff, and student leaders. The Center celebrated the hard work of the graduates and awarded them with certificates.
